About the Training
Deflecting Aggressive Behavior (DAB) a non restraint behavior management system that incorporates empowering youth, is group-process oriented and uses intentionally designed activities. Throughout the process, the staff learns the skills to facilitate a group process enhanced with activities, which teach appropriate anger management, communication and problem-solving skills. They also learn how to teach and facilitate the youth the process of “calling group.” In “group”, participants are accountable for their behavior. Group is also an opportunity for celebrating group or personal achievements or to check-in as a community.
DAB relies on a Control to Empowerment model. By beginning to let go of strict control of a group, students/youth become empowered to manage their own behavior and act appropriately because of group expectations. DAB enables youth to remain in a least restrictive environment possible, both physically and emotionally.
DAB uses a set of behavioral norms or expectations, called the Full Value Concept, to set standards for the group. These can be designed by the model or co-created in one of the initial trainings to make it best fit the group.
